Le Musée de l’Image Populaire présente les œuvres de Nenad Levatic, trente ans après une première exposition en ses murs, mettant au jour l’évolution de son travail et ses créations récentes.
Ce peintre d’origine croate arrivé en Alsace dans les années 1970 commence à peindre sous verre, avec des œuvres souvent rapprochées de l’art naïf croate. L’artiste est en effet né dans la même région qu’Ivan Generalic et Ivan Rabuzin, deux célèbres peintres naïfs yougoslaves. Toutefois, Nenad Levatic a exploré de nombreuses stylistiques et techniques, de même qu’une pluralité de sujets de représentation. Son exécution minutieuse et sa maîtrise de la palette colorée offrent à la vue un univers onirique singulier.
L’exposition présente des thématiques multiples comme les villages ou paysages de sa Croatie natale tout autant que les portraits de femmes nues ou les icônes religieuses. Il expérimente notamment le lien entre peinture et photographie, permettant un rendu très moderne. L’artiste développe aussi un travail de sculptures, poursuivant ses recherches avec de véritables dessins dans l’espace.
Les créations de Levatic dialoguent avec les collections du musée, où la peinture sous verre contemporaine demeure un objet d’étude privilégié. Cette technique s’inscrit dans une tradition ancienne en Alsace, utilisée notamment pour les souvenirs de mariage ou funéraires, et elle continue de fasciner les artistes actuels qui contribuent à renouveler son usage et à diversifier ses formes.
